Exaclty English players are made out better than what they actually are. Rooney is the most over rated if you watch him play you can see how many mistakes he actually makes in game. But when he scores he's all of a sudden the best superstar in the game. Realistically 41 goals in 100 games for United is below average. And don't start this garbage about he sets up goals as well so does every forward in the world basically. You look at a Kaka or Ronaldinho both score more than Rooney and both set more goals up than Rooney. Wayne Rooney is a good player but The reason these young talented English players will never rise to be up with the like of the Spanish,Italian and Brazilian players is because the media and fans talk them up so much they feel there too good for anyone.
I guarntee a English player won't win a world player of the year for the next 10 years.

Haha at the guy on the rumours saying 'Rafa will join Real and his first signing will be Lampard as he sees him as the complete midfielder he doesn't believe Gerrard is'. are you kidding? Gerrard is MUCH better than Lampard, Lampard can't tackle, has no pace, and even his cRossing and passing is dodgy, he's got a good finish on him, that's about it, Gerrard is widely renowned as the most complete midfielder in Europe, Lampard gets 20 goals a season because of the team he's in, if he played for a Newcastle or Tottenham, he wouldn't be half the player he is, Gerrard excelled in an underperfoming Liverpool side, coming through in the Roy Evans era, please. get a grip of yourselves Chelsea fans.

I don't agree with being a 'football fan' ahead of a fan of your club, yeah, ideally we'd all love our clubs to play brilliant football, but in reality, every true fan wouldn't care, no Manchester United fan would've been bothered if they'd have won the league with all 1–0 wins last season, I'm a lifelong Liverpool fan, and am used to the emphasis being on defense, from Houlliers era, to Rafas, although Rafa tried to change that last season, but you know, it's still a fantastic achievement to go to a place like the Nou Camp in the UEFA Cup and draw 0–0 (Houllier era) and go to the Nou Camp and win 2–1 in the champions league (Rafa era) , I really think the Premiership is the most exciting and quickest league in the world, although the Spanish title was a lot more exciting this year. I think people who dismiss English players as 'overrated' are fools, clubs like Barca, Real, Inter, AC Milan, would jump at the chance to sign Gerrard, Terry, Rio Ferdinand, Lampard or Rooney.

Like I said though, I'm a football fan before a Newcastle fan, and I believe appointing allardyce is the biggest mistake the club has ever made. and if Newcastle play the style of football that Bolton did, I just don't want to watch, its awful, it wins games, but as a fan of football I want to be entertained, and long ball does nothing for me, or any other football fan.

as far as the Liverpool issue, it was a fantastic achievement to win the champions league, and at the time I was pleased, but then listening to all the scousers claiming there were the best in Europe was just annoying. its selective memory, Everton finished higher that year, which means on a whole that year they performed better than you in the league, but because your an person u can't giv them any credit for it. at least be honest with urself, I'm nt saying Everton are better cause that would be ridiculous, but for that one yr, surely the table proves they played a little above themselves and managed to outshine ther local rivals in the league.

i won't lie, I dispise Liverpool, and Man United, but I can still admitt they are great teams and I wish Newcastle could play that standard of football, however, having people like Peter Crouch and Gary Neville in the ranks, is just unacceptable.

as I said th reason players want to come to England is because of the media exposure in this country, the press build people up so so much. it makes u not only a superstar of the football world but also a celebrity, which is typical of English society.

'With Spurs tipped to get Bent. The mighty Aston Villa are going to offer Darren Bent the chance to join a big club'. WHAT IDIOT ENTERED THIS?! Spurs are at least twice as big a club as Aston Villa. I mean what really notable achievments have Villa made? Spurs are the first English club to win a European cup and have finished closer to the top four in the last two previous seasons than any other side. were have Aston Villa finished? 10th? 12? MID–TABLE MECRODITY!

I could not agree more with the guy who says that English players are over rated. they are not as good as the English media makes them to be. I am not an English citizen or resident but even before an English player has played a league game he is already on the newspapers as the next big thing. Look at Walcott. No offence but he is not yet a star same with Rooney. No wonder Rooney hadnt scored in the Champions league for nearly three seasons. Infact I didn't know Kaka was that good until he outclassed manU, and that's because the Italian media didn't make him look better than he actually was.
Fact is, English players need to swallow their pride and accept their rightful place on the world charts and maybe they need the help of the media as well.

Everton an average outfit huh
well they did a * load better than Man City correct me if I'm wrong did Everton finish 6th and qualify for Europe and did Man City just do ordinary in Manchester Uniteds shadow and come in at 14th and qualify for * all except to escape Relegation

Liverpool are a lot closer to winning the league than Arsenal, especially since Henry is going, don't make excuses about injuries, we still finished ahead of you, look at our Champions League winning season, we ended up having to play Neil Mellor as a lone striker for a lot of it, and were missing, Cisse, Garcia and Gerrard for best parts of the season. Yes Everton did finish higher than us, that doesn't make them better, get nothing for finishing fourth, we won the champions league, Everton then got knocked out in the qualifying round for the champs league, which shows they're not even on a par with us, so you 'shut it'. Idiot.

You're an person if you say you want your team to play 'brilliant football', the fact is, if any team won the league, their fans wouldn't care if they'd won 1–0 throughout the whole season, same with Newcastle fans who were upset with Allardyces appointment, cause they 'dont want to play that style of football', get a grip, you haven't won a trophy for what, 30 years? You should be happy to play any style as long as you win something, as for the guy who said Rooney has no creativity, are you on something? I hate Rooney, being a lifelong Liverpool fan, but if you watched any Man United games last season, him and Ronaldo would tear teams apart. Also, Owen scored 16 goals for Real Madrid, perhaps 13 in the league, but 16 in total, I wish people wouldn't post on here unless they know what they're talking about, like the guy who said 'Hargreaves has come back to England because he wasn't good enough', he's never played here you tool, and won a lot of trophies.

Question.
Out of these 3 players {if they were English} where would they sit in the England team.

Arteta
Cahill
Viduka.

I beileve Arteta would start at RM. He is a great player.
Cahill pushing for a starting CM role. Cahill would be the first choice bench mid.
And Viduka would be on the bench. He adds some creativity and technical abilty that neither Rooney or Owen has.

The facts are that England have two world class players Beckham ( who is highley criticised, I don't understand the majority of goals scored by England at the world Cup in 2006 came from a Beckham cross, corner, free kick and he scored and has been a great player for over 10 years. And also Steven Gerrard.

English fans tend to tak there players up too much
examples – John Terry – good player but he is no Nesta or Cannavaro.
The biggest one that irritates me is Wayne Rooney he has to be the most overrated footballer ever to play the game. I mean cmon comparing him to the likes of Kaka,Messi,Ronaldinho, Cristiano Ronaldo,Ruud,David Villa,Torres and Eto'o.

There is also other players who arnt as hyped but I belive are on par with Rooney . Tevez, Cahill, Arteta
and Klose.

And as for the Gary Neville matter any one who knows football would have to agree he is no where near in the top 15 rb in the world.
I beilve the best RB is miguel from Benfica.

There is absolutley no way in the world that Gary Neville is one of the best RB in ther world.
Thats just plain Silly to even think he is.
The only reason he started for England is England have no RB. Now they have Miccah Richards I'm sure they will start with Richards.
Neville wouldn't be in my top 30 to play ar right back.
There are also many cb that could be a better right back then Neville.

Because Rush's 7 goals were scored in extremely difficult circumstances . he played for a poor side undergoing a period of change with all the other players refusing to pass to him – how many goals would Shevchenko have scored in serie a without a pass? for a striker its all about the service they receive and rush had none . I don't dispute that some british players are a failure when they go abroad but you failed to mention is that the likes of Gary lineker, John charles and even vinny samways succeeded . in fact the fact that an, at best, average player like samways can succeed in Spain shows that the strength of its league is no stronger than the epl it is just a different style of football . serie a, primera liga and the epl are none stronger than the other after all if you are going to talk about failures abroad you could come up with as many Italians going to Spain failing as you could brits

I don't really think G neviile is one of the best Right backs in Europe he is not even among the 5 best.

Engand havnt won a world cup for 40 years surley they have to be one of the most overrated countries in football. Sure I think they have the best league in the world. ( largley to the quality of foreign players but mostly the pace its played at) . But as soon as hits International level , everyy time they play a quality team in a tournmant they always seem to ewmbarras themselves. They play ugly football against the top opposition this was highlighted when they played brazil a few weeks ago. There like a Bolton of international level not great footballers just aggresive ones. I can't remember the last time they beat a powerhouse footballing nation except in the 2002 world cup against Argentina in a major tournmant. Lets go over there recent performences in Euro and the world cup

W Cup 2006
lost vs portugal (QF)
W Cup 2002
lost vs brazil (QF)
W Cup 1998
lost vs Argentina ( Round 16 )
W Cup 1994 ( didn't qualify )

Euro 2004
lost vs France
lost vs portugal (QF)
euro 2000
lost vs portugal
beating that German team didn't count they were patheric.
( Out in Group Phase )
euro 1996
The Best English side in the last 20 years.
Played well went through on penalties twice if I remember and an excellent victory over hollland 4 or 5 goals to 1 I think it was.

Surley these results show that the England national team has just gotten worse every year

To the guy who drew up the list of English failures in the Europe, your so right, there are people who think the premiersip is the only league in the world and far superior to serie a and la liga. we English tend to rate our players so highly, for instance 19 year old lional Messi is better than every English player yet some person might still think Gerrard or Rooney is better. and until we realise our national team is average we can not move forward. because we are average no creativity technically inept.

gooner boy 14

Its very simple Liverpool are the 4th best English team, the only reason Liverpool finihsed on top of Arsenal is because thierry Henry and robin van Persie were injured for half a season, if the same thing happened to Liverpool Bellamy and Fowler would be the full time strikers woth no back up.

they are cup team hence only ever winning cups, please ont bring up 18 times champions because right now Liverpool are way of the pace

How can you not think 7 goals in 29 games is a failure. He left because he didn't "settle" in Italy.
Even if he didn't "settle" he still was a failure. Stats don't lie in goalscoring terms.

Michael Owen 16 goals in 20 starts ?
He only scored 13 goals for Real Madrid in his whole time there.

It depends what u mean on the best league in the world. as far as entertainment, havin lots of goals etc. English is the best in the world, but as far as having the best players in the world and the best teams. I think serie a and la liga are marginally ahead. and to the person that said king campbell Neville etc. the fact that u mentioned Neville, and world class, in the same sentence, makes me despise u 100%. Gary Neville is awful, and Messi and Ronaldinho would expose his weakness with ease. Liverpool are totally over rated, they win the champs league, fair enough fantastic achievement, but then all ther person fans claim they are the best team in Europe, didn't your fierce rivals Everton finish above u in the league that very season? so shut it. I agree Rafa is a quality manager, and has potential to win the Premiership, but I just dnt think it will be done, infact I wouldn't be surprised if Rafa leaves this summer.

also, the reason the English league is desired by so many top pros, it has so much media exposure, no other league has as much media interest. every player in the league is under scrutiny every day basically. plus we pay the biggest wage, hence Ballack cashing in by going to Chelsea.

as an Englishmen, id always want English teams to win etc, but not when they insist on playing awful football, at the end of the day, I'm a football fan, and the Italians and spaniards etc play superior football.

Rush at Juventus wasn't liked, it was a time when Platini had just retired, none of the Juventus players would really pass to him, so he was having to chase every ball himself, when Rush has always been an out and out striker. Owen barely got a start for Madrid and got 16 goals in 20 actual starts, a much better return than Drogba had in his first season in the Premiership. Woodgate was just injured too much, when he played the Real fans loved him. Hargreaves come back? He's never played in England, and he's won a LOT of trophies for Bayern munich, he was always regarded as one of their best players. As for the other guy, I'm a Liverpool fan and hate G. Neville, but he's still Englands best right back and one of the best in world, and if you don't rate Carragher, you obviously don't know anything about football.

In answer to the Ian rush at juve comment – the juve fans used to say having him was like having a Ferrari with no engine . they knew he was wasted on a very poor side and he only left because he couldn't settle in the country not because he was a failure – try checking facts before typing :)

Theres all this talk about players not cuttin it in the Premiership.
What about the players who have been in the Premiership but failed going to other foreign leagues.

Ian Rush went to Juve and scored 7 goals in 29 games. I mean really for a top Class Striker that's pathetic.

Michael Owen did OK in Spain but nothing Great.

Jonothan Woodgate and Owen Hargreaves came back here because they wernt playing well.

David Beckham has just started to play well for them this year in the last 3 months.
When he signed there Real were the champions but ever since he was there they won nothing – not a single trophy – untill now.

that's just ath the top of my head.

R u trying to put Carragher, king and Neville in the world class defender bracket. I mean serousley .

Dont be a fool and say only English teams have a never say die attitude that's the dumbest thing I've ever herd.
