Brains and footballers just don't mix

Every time I begin to think footballers can not really be as stupid as we all think they are, one of them opens their mouth and proves they really are that stupid. Gennaro Gattuso's comments about the English clubs doing well because they have more money, is a case in point.

For starters you only have to look back to the late seventies and early eighties, when English clubs dominated Europe, to show Rino that he is wrong. The top Spanish and Italian clubs have always paid more in wages and transfers.

English clubs succeed because they have one person at the top, not only picking the team and tactics, but also the players to buy. You only have to look at Alvaro Recoba, at Inter Milan, to see what a mistake it is to allow two different people to make the decisions.

The same thing cost Chelsea the Premier League this season. Jose Mourinho clearly did not want Khalid Boulahrouz and so Chelsea find themselves short in defence. If Jose had been able to choose a defender for himself then he would have had the confidence to pick him more often. Michael Essien could then stay where he is at his most effective - midfield.

Alex Ferguson's record is evidence of what can be achieved by having the right man in control of a club. The players are in absolutely no doubt who they have to answer to if they give a bad performance. They also know that the manager has faith in them, or else he would not have brought them into the club.

Yes money can help, a lot, but only in the hands of the right person.
