Scottish Premier League newcomers Gretna will sign Uruguayan midfielder Fabian Yantorno and former Hibs goalie Tony Caig.

Caig, 33, returns home from Vancouver Whitecaps for family reasons.

Yantorno, a 24 year old midfielder capped at U17 and Under-21 levels, was available from Miramar Misiones in Uruguay′s top flight.

The Montevideo born player, who previously played for Bella Vista, was due to fly into Scotland Monday.

Gretna started their pre season training Thursday and Yantorno will join the team at their Preston base should he pass a medical.

Chief exec Graeme Muir explained that the signing was thanks to their director of club development.

"Mick Wadsworth has lots of contacts in the UK and beyond," he asked BBC Sport. "And we are attempting to create a young and vibrant team."

Caig joined Vancouver last year after 3 seasons without a 1st team appearance for Newcastle United.

He established a new league record of 11 clean sheets whilst helping Vancouver to the USL First Division Championship.

But the Englishman returns home for family reasons only short of the end of his contract.

And Gretna are in negotiations with Vancouver about the future of the goalie who started his career with Carlisle United before heading for Blackpool, Charlton Athletic, Hibs then Newcastle.

"We hope to do something that could be of benefit to Tony and his family," mentioned Muir. "A goalie of that experience could be good for Gretna."

Meanwhile, midfielder Ryan Baldacchino mentioned that David Irons will have the full backing of the players should the assistant step up to become Gretna′s new manager.

Gretna sealed promotion, and the Division One title, whilst Rowan Alexander was on sick leave.

And it expects that Irons, who had acted as caretaker, will soon be said as his permanent successor.

"Rowan has done a terrific position at the club and Davie was there and done it as well," mentioned 26 year old Baldacchino.

"We don′t really know the situation as of yet, however we′re all behind Davie at the minute. All the lads know him from taking the training day to day and we′re all quite comfortable with the situation at the moment. They are completely different personalities and they both have positive points in their own ways. Davie is closer to the players and will speak to you, whilst Rowan had taken a harder line with things. Rowan appointed him as his assistant, so he knew what Davie would do. He found his feet in the last few games of last season and we are all looking forward to working with him if he will be the manager next season."

Vancouver Whitecaps goalie Tony Caig will not be traveling with the team on their upcoming eastern road trip.

Caig has requested his release and will be returning to England for personal reasons.

'The club and Tony reached an agreement last winter and he is presently under contract for the remainder of the season,' mentioned Whitecaps President Bob Lenarduzzi.

'We are aggressively pursuing more goalie options.'

Caig played 39 games for the Whitecaps since signing with the club on April 13, 2006.
