Thierry Henry Rumours and Transfers
29 10 2007
Striker Thierry Henry won the praise of Barcelona president Joan Laporta following his goal in the side's 2-0 win against Almeria.
The France international has struggled to find his best form since moving to Spain from Arsenal in a £16million transfer during the summer.
However, following his first goal in five matches and a penalty from Lionel Messi, Laporta led the support for Henry.
He said: "I'm very happy; it's so important for his self-confidence that he scored."
Team-mate Xavi added: "We searched for a lot today, and we found a lot, and [Henry] had a good match."
Meanwhile, coach Frank Rijkaard admitted that Barca were not at their best in the match, but was pleased to pick up maximum points.

Emmanuel Adebayor may well be enjoying his best season since moving to Arsenal, but he has told Gunners fans he intends to be a world-beater.
Adebayor has scored six league goals already this season, leaving him needing just another three to surpass his previous best tally of eight in an Arsenal jersey.
The Togo international could be heard singing the praises of Theo Walcott earlier in the week, predicting the teenager can surpass Thierry Henry, and Adebayor intends to achieve similar superstar status himself.
"In the game I'm very good," he told The Mail.
"I'm strong, I'm fast, I can jump high, my passing is good, my holding of the ball is per ... at the moment is very good. I nearly said perfect. But nothing is perfect, and I still need to work more on my finishing. I'm not saying I'm going to be the best player in the world, but I am going to be among them. When you talk to young players they all want to be Kaka, Ronaldinho, Henry. Their ambition is to be big and my ambition is to be big.'
A facet of Adebayor's game is his pace, which he reveals is only inferior to Armand Traore in the current Arsenal squad.
The powerful striker's performances have earned him comparisons to Chelsea's Didier Drogba, comparisons Adebayor is pleased to hear.
"A lot of people are saying that and it's a good thing, because Didier is one of the best," he added.

Barcelona striker Thierry Henry believes Rangers will go through to the knockout stages of the Champions League after they held the Spanish side to a goalless draw on Tuesday night.
As a result, Barcelona and Rangers top Group E at the half way stage, with seven points each.
The Scottish side were expected to struggle in the group that also includes German champions Stuttgart and French champions Lyon.
However, following wins in each of their first two games, and a draw against Barca, Rangers are in a strong position to qualify from the group.
It's an opinion shared by Thierry Henry.
"Why not?" said the Frenchman. "I don't know how the game is going to be at our place but I think Rangers have what it takes to also win in Stuttgart and the decisive game could be here against Lyon."
If Rangers beat Stuttgart later this month, they're likely to only need a draw from their home game with Lyon to advance to the knockout stage.
Henry explained: "If it goes like it is right now, Lyon would have to come here and win with a big scoreline. To be honest, although I am French, I don't see that happening here. You have to give Rangers credit. They fought very hard, they are top of the group with ourselves and they deserve to be where they are."

Barcelona star Thierry Henry has claimed he would like to finish his brilliant career in the Major League Soccer.
Henry moved from Arsenal, where he made history, to Barcelona in the summer. The Frenchman has had a tough start to life with the Blaugrana, having scored a triple in eight games since his move to La Liga.
The 30-year-old has revealed that he does not plan to see out his career at Camp Nou, as he would be happy to play in the Major League Soccer, like former French world champion Youri Djorkaeff.
'I know that everybody knows how much I like the USA,' he told La Gazzetta dello Sport.
'I would be very happy to play there but it is too early. I love American people, I also love their sports. I enjoy a lot watching NBA games and American football.'

France blasted the Faroe Islands 6-0 in their Euro 2008 Group B qualifier on Saturday despite arriving on the North Atlantic islands just hours before the match after their flight was delayed a day by fog.
Nicolas Anelka opened the scoring for the visitors, connecting with a cross from Franck Ribery to beat goalkeeper Jakup Mikkelsen after seven minutes.
A minute later, Thierry Henry won the ball and punched a low shot to the far corner past Mikkelsen to score his 41st goal in 95 appearances for France, tying a record set by Michel Platini.
Substitute Karim Benzema headed home a free-kick from Ribery on 49 minutes to make it 3-0 before Jerome Rothen scored France's fourth on 64 minutes from a direct freekick.
Benzema scored his second in the 79th minute after a pass from Henry, and Hatem Ben Arfa scored France's sixth in the third minute of injury time.
After last month's shock 1-0 home defeat by Scotland, World Cup runners-up France will qualify for next year's finals if they win their last two qualifiers against Lithuania and Ukraine.
France face Lithuania in Nantes on Wednesday before their final match against Ukraine in Kiev on Nov 21.

Dean Ashton admits he had doubts as to whether he would ever get back into the England squad.
The West Ham star broke his ankle last year, whilst on international duty last year and it finished his season before it began.
Now just over 12 months after suffering the problem he has been recalled after Steve McClaren named him in his squad for the Euro 2008 qualifiers against Estonia and Russia.
"I'm just so delighted to get selected because there was a time when I thought my chance had gone," Ashton said in the Daily Star.
"I'm no different to anyone else in that I have always dreamed of playing for my country. And there was always the fear that I wouldn't get another opportunity with England again. To be honest, because it was such a bad injury for me, all I wanted to do was just get back fit enough to play football again full stop, let alone go on to represent my country. So when I went into training yesterday morning and the gaffer told me I had been called up, it was such great news and kind of a reward for the hard work of the last year."
Ashton is being tipped to start, but he is not even thinking about whether he will make McClaren starting XI yet.
"I've not even come close to proving myself at that level yet, so I'm not going to get burdened by other people's expectations," he said.
"I put pressure on myself to do well and know I can cope with that but I just need to link up with the squad and savour and enjoy the whole experience. I want to prove myself at this level, given the chance. But I also want to learn things over the eight or nine days away with the squad - and actually make it to the matches this time! Hopefully I can prove I am not just a cumbersome striker with no pace. The programme I went through with my physio John Green has changed my body strength and speed. I'm not Thierry Henry or anyone like that but I'm still quicker than people think and, physically, in better shape after a year out."

Roy Keane last night criticised Stuart Pearce's decision not to call up Grant Leadbitter for England Under-21s' forthcoming European Championships qualifiers against Montenegro and Republic of Ireland.
While Wolves winger Michael Kightly and Southampton midfielder Andrew Surman were included in Pearce's travelling party despite a complete lack of Premier League experience, Leadbitter was overlooked for the second time in a month.
The 20-year-old is in the form of his life, having scored two goals in his last two Premier League games, and Keane cannot understand why he is consistently ignored when it comes to international honours.
"Grant didn't make the England Under-21 squad even though he's playing regularly in the Premier League," said the Sunderland boss.
"Some players have been selected even though they aren't even playing in the Championship. I'm surprised, but let's not go there."
Leadbitter has started the Black Cats' last four matches after successfully recovering from a hamstring injury sustained in pre-season, and the youngster is a certain starter tomorrow as Sunderland look to wreck Arsenal's 100 per cent record at the Emirates Stadium.
Expected to struggle following the summer departure of Thierry Henry, Arsene Wenger's side have instead won six of their opening seven league games to move two points clear at the top of the table.
And while Keane does not expect his former employers, Manchester United, to surrender their Premier League crown without a fight, he is equally convinced that Arsenal will mount a credible title challenge this season.
"If you were a punter and you wanted to watch a team, I would suggest that Arsenal and United are the teams you would go and watch," said the Irishman.
"Arsenal were criticised a little bit last season, but you would still pay to watch them. They're scoring more goals this year and taking a lot more chances, and sometimes you have to give these teams a chance to develop. The younger players' decision making has improved. They're certainly taking their chances and they've matured quickly over the last few years. At the moment, they definitely look like they'll be in with a shout of the title."
Cesc Fabregas has been at the heart of Arsenal's resurgence, with Keane hailing the Spaniard as one of the foremost midfielders in English football.
"He's got a chance, hasn't he," he joked. "He's probably a different type of player to me - not as cultured! He's a good player and he's still maturing. He seems to have settled down this season and he's added goals to his locker. I think any top midfielder has to have goals in him. He's already scored more than he did last season, but that comes from the whole team maturing together."
Sunderland's team has not been maturing as quickly as Keane would like, although there were obvious signs of promise when they held out for more than 70 minutes at Old Trafford last month.
Tomorrow's game is likely to see a repeat of the 4-5-1 formation Keane adopted against Manchester United, but the Black Cats boss has demanded his players ask more questions of Arsenal goalkeeper Manuel Almunia than they posed to Edwin van der Sar.
"Hopefully, we can learn a little bit from the United game," he said.
"We did OK for long periods of that game, even though we ended up with no points. We showed we are confident enough in that kind of environment, although I'd like to see us get forward a bit more (tomorrrow) and create two or three chances. We might be something like 20-1 but, in a two-horse race, you have to believe. Arsenal might get stuck on the tube! Seriously, though, we all have dreams of where we want to get to. How you get there is another thing entirely, but you have to believe you can get there."

Thierry Henry is desperate to help Barcelona win the UEFA Champions League this term to rid himself of the memory of defeat at the hands of his current club two years ago.
The French international is reminded of the night that the Blaugrana defeated Arsenal in Paris every day as a photo of the victorious team hangs in the dressing room at Camp Nou.
Now that Henry has switched sides he wants a new photo for the wall, if only to prevent him from taking down the old one and hiding it.
"Every morning I see that picture and every time I start thinking about it and then I have to say 'no, I will not do it'," he told TF-1, resisting the urge to remove the offending image.
"I hope that this year I can hold the trophy in my own hands instead."
Despite scoring his first goals for Barca when netting an impressive hat-trick at the weekend, Henry believes he will not be in peak condition for another four or five weeks.
"I am not yet at my best, but I hope to be by the end of October," he explained.
"I spent five months without playing and I am now looking forward to being back in perfect condition."
As well as recovering fully from the injury that kept him out of action last term, Henry is still adjusting to his new club and the new style of football.
"The main difference with England is that there the football is more direct, while in Spain it is more patient and you have to learn to wait for the ball," Henry stated. "I am still adapting to that."
