Steve McManaman

Birth Date: Feb 11 1972
Birth Place: Liverpool
Birth Nation: England
Height: 180cm
Weight: 72Kg
Nationality: British
Position: Midfielder

Steve McManaman was an Everton fan as a boy but like so many others was a Liverpool player from a young age. His dribbling skills soon marked him out as a future star and he soon broke into the Liverpool 1st team.

He was never a prolific scorer for Liverpool but those he did score tended to be memorable. He failed to sign up for the Gerard Houllier revival, instead choosing the riches of a Bosman free transfer to Real Madrid. It started well enough with a Champions League winners medal but things have turned sour for him.

He has not played much 1st team football for Madrid and Fiorentin Perez, the Madrid president has tried to force him out of the club to save on his massive wages. He is one of two players that Inter Milan have the choice of taking as part of the Ronaldo transfer deal.

A move might be the best thing for him as he would need to be playing regular 1st team football if he is ever to wear the 3 lions of England again. But even then his failure to reproduce his club form in England's colours in the past may count against him.

Former England winger Steve McManaman was appointed to the board of the company purchasing into Birmingham City.

The 35 year old will become an exec director with Grandtop International if it takes up its deal to buy a 29.2% stake in the club.

McManaman will offer advice to the group, which is owned by Hong Kong businessman Carson Yeung.

"They know my expertise in sport in England and in particular football," he informed the South China Morning Post.

"I know a lot of people in the sport and I have a lot of contacts. I will help out and have given ideas as a friend as the people involved in the company are very good friends of mine and hopefully we can have exciting times in the future."

McManaman played for Liverpool, Real Madrid and Manchester City and won 29 England caps before retiring in 2005.

He is reported to have helped Yeung set up his deal with Birmingham.

Directors David and Ralph Gold as well as David Sullivan have each agreed to sell 14.81% of the club′s shares to Yeung.

Karren Brady has agreed to part with a 0.23% stake, with fellow director Roger Bannister completing the agreement, by offering to sell 0.05%.

The arrangement makes Yeung the largest individual shareholder, however does not put him in total control of the club.

Sullivan and the Golds will still maintain a major role, though the door is open for Yeung to gain a controlling interest.

In the new arrangement the stakes of the Gold brothers and Sullivan fall to 23.22% each.
