Steve Marlet started his professional career in 1990 at French second division team, Red Star. He had 137 games with them and scored 42 times. Marlet then signed with Auxerre in 1996. He notched up 25 goals in 97 games for Auxerre before he joined Lyon in July 2000 and scored 13 goals in 36 league appearances.

Then in August 2001 Fulham broke their transfer record and bought the French international striker for £11.5 million. However he had an unlucky start to his Premiership career. He failed to hit the net in his first seven games and then a knee injury stopped him playing for two months. But at the end of December Marlet he came back from injury and netted 10 goals in his first season with the Cottagers
