Stephen Hughes started out as a trainee at Arsenal and was an England under 21 international. He won the Premier League with Arsenal in 1998.

In 1999 he had a loan spell with Fulham. But then he signed for Everton in March 2000 for £3 million. He stayed at Goodison Park until July 2001 when Watford got him on a free transfer.

But injury problems limited his appearances at Vicarage Road and then in December of 2002 the Hornets released him to ease their financial crisis. After training with Charlton for a while at the end of last season and then spending pre-season with them they signed him on a short term contract.
