Lyon paid £19 million - a French record fee for Sonny Anderson from FC Barcelona in 1999 Brazilian international Anderson quickly settled at the Stade Gerland and became France's leading goal scorer twice.

He has won six national titles, as well as a Spanish
Cup and a UEFA Super Cup Anderson missed part of the 2001/02 season through injury but still hit the target 14 times in 25 appearances. He also played five games in Europe that season and scored a hat-trick in the UEFA Cup against Club Brugge KV as Lyon went through, on away goals after losing the first leg 4-1

In the summer of 2002 Sonny gave his signature on a new contract which could keep him at Olympique Lyonnais until June 2004. Instead he joined Villareal in the summer of 2003.
