A combative player he has played at left back, left wing back, left midfield and central midfield in his short career. He started his career at Crewe Alexandra, another product of the Dario Gradi school of excellence. He refused to move to Derby when they first came in for him as he wanted to stay at Crewe to help them avoid relegation, but he moved to them 2 months later in May 1999, after Crewe had avoided the drop, for £3m.
