Ryan Giggs Rumours and Transfers
26 10 2007
Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United legacy could be extended yet further after Edwin van der Sar revealed that he expects to prolong his stay at Old Trafford, whilst hinting he may adopt more of a coaching role in the future.
Following his forced retirement from the game, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer recently took up an ambassadorial role with the club, while Ryan Giggs has also intimated he might too remain with The Red Devils after hanging up his boots, and now Van der Sar has suggested he could stay after his playing days are over.
He said: 'I am playing at a very high level every week and, with my experience, I can maybe help the younger players a lot in the future. Officially, my agent has not heard anything official from the club yet but I expect to hold talks with the relevant people in December. Last year we extended my contract in that month, so that could well happen again. I am very happy here at the club. You can guess what I will do if and when I get a new offer from the club.'
If the Dutchman does stay in the North West, he could prove to be an influential figure in the development of United and England hopeful Ben Foster, who is currently out with a long-term cruciate injury.

After retiring from international football earlier this year, Manchester United's winger, Ryan Giggs feels fresh and rested ahead of Saturday's trip to Villa Park.
With the majority of his team mates away on international duty last week, and team-mate, Nemanja Vidic, this week voicing his concerns over players fitness, after the international break, Giggs feels ready for a return to Premiership football.
The Welsh winger's decision to leave behind his national side, in favour of his club, was a difficult choice, but one he feels vindicated in making.
'It was a big decision," Giggs told United's official club website.
"I said at the time I hoped it would prolong my United career and even though I've only missed a couple of internationals, I feel I've benefited already. I've done really good training this week and during the last international break as well so hopefully it will prolong my career. I'm feeling the benefits, definitely."
The former Welsh captain has this week signed a contract extension, tying him to Old Trafford for a further two seasons.
Giggs earned 64 caps for his country, scoring 13 goals, in an international career that spanned over 15 years.

Carlos Tevez feels his Manchester United team-mates have had a positive effect on his game and says joining the club was a "dream come true".
The Argentina international moved to Old Trafford in the summer from West Ham where he took a long time to find his form after his surprise arrival in August 2006.
However, he has had no such problems adapting to life with the Red Devils and having a manager like Ferguson has contributed to that.
"The main difference between United and West Ham is that the coach believes in me at my new club," Tevez told a national paper.
"I'm feeling physically stronger with every game. That makes me feel good and everything else, like scoring goals, comes as a result. When I look around the dressing room and see my team-mates there, I realise I'm at one of the most important clubs in the world. That is a dream come true. The most surprising thing about the squad is even though all the players are stars, they are all actually really humble and are good people. They've made me feel good and I've now got various friends in the squad like Rio Ferdinand, Ryan Giggs, Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney. I'm doing quite well with my English now. I understand the boss and my team-mates perfectly."

Ryan Giggs has paid tribute to Gerard Pique, Danny Simpson and Anderson for their contributions in the 4-0 victory over Wigan.
Simpson joined Pique in defence after Nemanja Vidic and John O'Shea were both forced off through injury inside the opening half hour.
Giggs was delighted with the way both players coped with the pressure and also added something to United's forward play.
"Pique came in at centre-half and did a good job, and so did Simmo," Giggs told the club's official website.
"They got two assists really, so overall it was a really good performance from them both."
Anderson also came on midway through the first half and produced one of his most eye-catching displays in a Manchester United shirt.
"In the second half Anderson was really involved in a lot of the play," said Giggs.
"He worked hard, showed some great touches, some great passes and he's still only young and finding his feet, but he put in a really good performance."
Giggs will be one of the few United players not to link up with his country over the next fortnight, having retired from international football earlier this year.
But he insists he will enjoy the break and then aim to come back stronger than ever for United's Premier League clash with Aston Villa on 20th October.
He explained: "I look forward to not playing, really. This is why I retired from international football, to get the break and to look forward to playing for United and being fresh again."
