Rivaldo Rumours and Transfers

06 07 2007

Olympiacos CFP have continued to rebuild for next season with Serbia forward Darko Kovacevic becoming their 2nd signing in as many days.

The 33 year old has agreed a one year contract with the Greek champions who yesterday added defender Paraskevas Antzas to their summer recruits, having previously acquired Argentinian duo Leonel Nunez and Luciano Galletti.

Kovačević was available after leaving relegated Spanish side Real Sociedad de Futbol and arrived in Athens last night to complete negotiations.

"I hope it will be a very positive experience and hope to win trophies with Olympiacos," mentioned the forward, who scored 92 goals in 261 league games for Real Sociedad.

"I don′t like to make promises however I would like to help the team achieve its objectives, to win the title and to do well in the Champions League."

Olympiacos, who were linked with Real Madrid CF defender Raul Bravo, will hope Kovačević can fill the gap left by Rivaldo′s departure for AEK Athens FC when they enter the 2007/2008 UEFA Champions League group stage.

Lifelong fan Charilaos Pappas described his transfer to AEK Athens FC as "the best choice" after completing his move from Olympiacos CFP Wednesday alongside Argentinian defender Federico Azcarate.

Fresh from helping Olympiacos seal the Greek title, the right sided midfielder explained his reasons for moving to AEK on a free transfer. "I think that I have made the best choice," he mentioned after signing a 3 year deal.

"I have come to the club that I have supported since my childhood. I belong to AEK Athens now and will do my best for them. I will learn a lot from the coach [Lorenzo Serra Ferrer] and will improve as a player." The 24 year old joined Olympiacos from Apollon Kalamaria FC in summer 2005 however struggled to hold down a regular place in the side, scoring 3 goals in 19 league appearances, 12 of which were as substitute.

Azcarate, meanwhile, arrives from Spain, where he was turning out for Club Atletico de Madrid′s reserve side following 2 seasons at Real Murcia CF. The 23 year old centre back explained that the lure of European football was a major factor in his decision to agree a 4 year contract with the Athenis based club. "I am delighted to be joining AEK," mentioned the South American. "They are a very important Greek club who are always competing for league and European honours.

"Our main targets for this season are to qualify for the group stage of the UEFA Champions League and to win the Greek league. We have recently signed Rivaldo and Rodolfo Arruabarrena so it is a good honour for me to play alongside them." AEK start their UEFA Champions League campaign in the 2nd qualifying round after finishing runners up in the Greek Super League last term.
