Derry City central defender Darren Kelly has until the weekend to win a transfer to Kilmarnock.
The 28 year old was on trial with the Scottish Premier League club and will be assessed again Friday.
Killie manager Jim Jefferies informed BBC Sport, "We had a look at him Tuesday and asked him back Friday. We have not got to the stage of discussing a fee, however we must decide whether we would like him and will have given him a decision by the end of the week."
Kelly is in his 3rd spell with Derry, having also been on the books of Shelbourne, Monaghan United, Carlisle United, who bought him for £100,000 in 2002, and Portadown.
Derry manager John Robertson has already signed a direct replacement in anticipation of Kelly's latest departure.
Mark McChrystal has rejoined the Irish club after being released by Partick Thistle.
Jefferies views Kelly as a replacement for Gordon Greer, who left Kilmarnock for family reasons in the summer and joined Doncaster Rovers.
Family reasons have also led to Kelly's wish for a return to the UK mainland.
And that alerted Kilmarnock, Dundee United, Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Scottish Premier League newcomers Gretna to his availability.
Gretna were not prepared to pay the reported £50,000 fee being demanded by Derry.
Inverness dropped their interest as they could have preferred a loan deal.
Caley Thistle manager also decided against signing French trialist Giany Joinville as he seeks a replacement for Darren Dods, who moved to Dundee United in the summer.
The French central defender was on trial at Caledonian Stadium.

Sheffield United manager Bryan Robson claims that he is interested in signing Newry City captain Richard Clarke.
The N. Ireland U21 international featured for the Blades in their friendly against Portadown on Saturday and impressed Robson.
"I thought Clarke did very well because it is very difficult for a young lad to go in cold in such a game," Robson informed the club's website.
"He moved round the pitch well and I will talk to the lad and his manager however there is a lot of other interest in him from England."

Carnegie Premier League side Newry City are waiting to see if Sheffield United manager Bryan Robson tables a bid for their captain Richard Clarke.
N. Ireland U21 international Clarke made a guest appearance for the English Championship club in a 2-0 pre season friendly triumph at Portadown.
Robson mentioned he could be speaking to Clarke and Newry manager Gerry Flynn before making a decision.
Clarke had only completed a week on trial with League 2 side Bury.

Former Republic of Ireland U21 international Henry McStay has begun a trial with SPL club St Mirren.
The 22 year old former Leeds, Halifax and Portadown player had a trial spell with Aberdeen 2 years ago.
Saints manager Gus MacPherson informed the club website, "We'll have ex Leeds United and Halifax player Henry McStay with us for a few days. He will be here for us to have a look at him over several training sessions," MacPherson added.
The centre back will be hoping to follow Craig Dargo, Mark Howard, Would Haining and Gary Mason in joining the Paisley club.
McStay arrived as the St Mirren players came back for pre season training.
"The players all reported back today in decent shape and we got what work we needed to do done," MacPherson said.
"We gave the players a longer than normal training session to get them back into the swing of things however for the rest of the week it will be double sessions."
