Philippe Mexes joined Auxerre's
youth team at 16 after leaving Toulouse FC
In November 1999 he managed to get into the Auxerre
senior squad and in the summer of 2000 he played his part in the French team
that won the U18 UEFA European Championship
During 2000/01 he was a regular in the Auxerre defence and was touted
for a move to Manchester United for a ?20m transfer fee but Mexes stayed where
he was and aided Auxerre to third place in the 2001/02 French first division
Mexes gained a French U21 place for the 2002 UEFA European
Under 21 Championships. He made two appearances and the team finished runners-up.
During that same year Mexes won a place in the senior French national team
