Bardsley joined Manchester United's youth set-up at the age of 8 and he started a scholarship with Manchester United youth teams in 2001.

Bardsley made his first team debut in a League Cup defeat against West Bromwich Albion in December 2003. His second first team appearance came soon after in January 2004 in an FA Cup match against Northampton Town.

Phillip was then farmed out on loan for the rest of the season to United's feeder club Royal Antwerp.

His Premier League debut was also in a defeat, at home to Blackburn Rovers in September 2005. Phillip signed a new long-term contract after an impressive run in the team while Gary Neville was absent due to injury. Then in March 2006 he was lent to Burnley till the end of the season to gain a bit more first team experience.

He has a younger brother, Josh, who is expected to be a future star.
