Malaysian clubs are limiting the national team's striking options by relying on foreign forwards, coach Norizan Bakar said on Tuesday.

Malaysia found goals in short supply at the recent ASEAN championships and were dumped out of the competition by eventual winners Singapore in the semi-finals on penalties after drawing both legs 1-1.

"During the ASEAN Cup our biggest problem was scoring, and this is due to the lack of exposure given to the local players," Norizan told the New Straits Times.

"Every Super League and Premier League team has a foreign striker and therefore local strikers are not given the opportunity. If every state can be limited to one foreign striker, defender and midfielder each, it will be good," he said.

"The local players can learn from them."

The top-tier Super League's leading scorer is Perak's Guinean striker Keita Mandjou, with six goals from six matches, while two more foreigners are tied on five goals along with Malaysia's Azlan Ismail, of Perlis.

Norizan, who himself relied on overseas strikers in guiding Perlis to Super League glory in 2005, will lead the team at July's Asian Cup, which Malaysia is hosting along with Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam.
