Vidic joined Red Star Belgrade's youth system at the age of 14, but his first opportunity for first team football came on a year's loan to Spartak Subotica.
He cemented a first team place on his return to Belgrade and impressed sufficiently to earn a 6million Euros move to Russia to join Spartak Moscow in 2004.
After requesting a move from Spartak, Manchester United stepped into sign Vidic in January 2006 for ?7 million, this was in the face of competition from Liverpool and Fiorentina. He didn't have to wait long for his United debut which came in the second leg of the Carling Cup semi final against Blackburn Rovers on January 25 2006.
Vidic was a member of the Serbia and Montenegrin national side's 'Famous Four' backline, alongside Goran Gavrancic, Ivica Dragutinovic and Mladen Krstajic. Unfortunately he suffered a knee ligament injury prior to the 2006 World Cup and had to watch from the sidelines as the previously solid defence fell to pieces. His absence was felt by many to be key to this. Though Nemanja was due to miss the first match anyway due to a one-match ban after a sending off in the team's final qualifying match for the Tournament.
