As a lad, Michael was an Everton football club fan. Michael Owen came out of Liverpool's youth team system. Owen made his Liverpool League debut and scored against Wimbledon on May 6 1997.

He scored thirty goals during his first season in the Premiership. In 1997/98 Owen was voted the PFA Young Player of the Year and was also voted the BBC Sports Personality of the Year for 1998. In February 1998 Owen became the youngest player this century to represent England making his debut against Chile at the age of eighteen years and two months Michael scored his first hat-trick in a Coca-Cola Cup tie against Grimsby Town Owen then became the first England player since Sir Geoff Hurst (in the 1966 World Cup Final at Wembley) to score a hat-trick against Germany.

It was in Munich when England triumphed 5-1 in a World Cup qualifier in 2001 Michael was named European Footballer of the Year in December 2001 Owen scored his 100th Liverpool goal against West Ham at Upton Park on December 29 2001 Michael netted 38 goals in all competitions in the 2001/02 season.

By the start of the 2002/03 season, Owen had scored 111 goals in 208 appearances for Liverpool Michael Owen's honours include the 2001 FA Cup, UEFA Cup, FA Charity Shield and European Super Cup. Owen's father Terry was a professional football player with Everton and Chester. He has become the youngest Englishman to gain 50 caps - he was 23. This in the season after he scored 19 league goals for an underachieving Liverpool side.
