After playing for Go Ahead Eagles and Willem II in the Dutch Eredivisie, Marc switched to AFC Ajax in 1992. He was ever present in the club's 1995 UEFA Champions League winning season. Overmars then moved to the English Premiership in 1997, where he showed he was as comfortable on the left flank for Arsenal as he had been on the right at Ajax. His goal scoring prowess, trickery and pace won over the Highbury fans as he immediately added the league and FA Cup double to his three Dutch titles.

He also hit the opening goal in the 1998 FA Cup final against Newcastle United Dutch international winger Marc Overmars joined FC Barcelona from Arsenal FC for ?39.6m after starring at EURO 2000. Overmars scored eight times in 31 appearances for the Barcelona team Overmars was also a regular feature of Barcelona's 2001/02 UEFA Champions League campaign. His international experience includes appearances at the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cup finals, where he aided the Netherlands to the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively.
