He joined Fiorentina in May 1995 from fellow Italian side
Bari after 75 appearances and 7 goals. He made 54 appearances
for Fiorentina and was the club captain.

In June 1997 he signed for Glasgow Rangers in a ?4m deal,
claiming that Manchester United had tried to scupper the
deal with a late ?5.5m bid for him.
He suffered an achilles tendon injury which delayed his
debut until the April 1998 Scottish Cup semi-final at Parkhead, which Rangers won 2-1. In November 1998 he won the Scottish League Cup with a 2-1 win over St Johnstone.
In August 1999 he promoted, along with then team-mate Rod
Wallace, an anti racism campaign. Four months later he was
caught on camera calling Borussia Dortmund's Viktor Ikpeba
a "black bastard" during a UEFA Cup tie. He publicly
apologised afterwards.

He claimed to have turned down offers from Bayern Munich
and Barcelona in May 2000, while in January 2001 a move to
West Ham United falls through. In November 2001 he was fined
for speeding after being clocked at 96 mph.
He received a fair play award from Aberdeen fans in January
2002, this was because he pleaded with his own team's fans
during a previous match with the Dons. He was voted the Scottish Players Player of the Year in April 2002.
This summer he became a £1.4m summer signing for Blackburn.
