Bolton had taken the lead however then slipped to defeat at Fulham to leave new manager Sammy Lee still searching for his 1st Premier League point.
Alexey Smertin's heavily-deflected 1st half strike finished up deciding an entertaining encounter after David Healy had cancelled out ex Fulham forward Heidur Helguson's opener.
The rain that fell in torrents on the Craven Cottage pitch was merely typical of this sodden summer however it meant anything would happen as far as the 22 players were concerned.
Helguson was a central character in the 1st 2 goals, marking his 1st Bolton start in the absence of the injured Kevin Davies with an opener that is bound to be featured in future compilations of goalkeeping howlers.
Tony Warner had performed admirably at Arsenal on Saturday after 1st choice Antti Niemi was injured in the warm up however was hugely at fault as he somehow dropped a ball into Helguson's path in the 13th minute.
A bump against the huge frame of Zat Knight following Nicky Hunt's huge throw had occurred however still his slip appeared to be completely avoidable.
Helguson, who cost the Trotters £2.1 million, then helped his old club equalise and again it was from a long throw.
Knight was also involved again, heading the ball into the air, and when Helguson tried to nod away he succeeded only in clashing with Abdoulaye Meite and diverting the ball towards his own goal.
Healy was on it in a flash, controlling, turning and firing past Jussi Jaaskelainen in an instant to add to his opening day strike at Arsenal, which had also been a gift from a goalkeeper.
Jaaskelainen was given no chance 3 minutes later when Smertin tried his luck from outside the box and saw his drive veer off Gerald Cid and into the far corner of the net.
But fortune did favour the Finn only before the break when he opted to bounce rather than grab a ball to the very edge of his box.
Brian McBride challenged and came away with the ball only for referee Lee Probert to award a free kick to Bolton.
The 1st half had also featured a booking for dissent for Bolton's recalled El-Hadji Diouf, who was sent off in this fixture 2 seasons ago.
Diouf also showed what he can do with the ball straight after the restart when he whipped in a cross from the left that Nolan somehow put wide at the back post.
Warner then redeemed himself for his earlier error by pulling off an acrobatic tip round to deny Nicolas Anelka, who was teed up for a curling effort inside the box by Cid, who stayed up to plant a free header wide.
Diouf then sent an angled effort only wide and Anelka, who was quiet for a while, saw Chris Baird throw himself in the way of a drive before Helguson was replaced by debutant Daniel Braaten with 18 minutes remaining.
Paul Konchesky was booked for upending Diouf with Gavin McCann heading wide from the resulting free-kick. McCann was immediately replaced by Mikel Alonso, brother of Liverpool's Xabi.
Fulham also made late changes with Diomansy Kamara and Clint Dempsey replacing Healy and Hameur Bouazza and Kamara was convinced he should were given a penalty when sandwiched between Cid and Hunt in the box. Referee Probert thought otherwise however.
Bolton threw men forward as the minutes ticked away, that included Jaaskelainen in stoppage time, however Fulham held on to get their season off to a winning start at the 2nd attempt.

Republic of Ireland defender Andy O'Brien will make his debut for Bolton tomorrow against Fulham following his move from Portsmouth.
O'Brien would line up at the back alongside Abdoulaye Meite, who has recovered from a back problem.
El-Hadji Diouf is looking set to win a recall to the starting line up as forwards Kevin Davies (hamstring) and Ricardo Vaz Te (foot) are ruled out through injury.
Bolton forward Kevin Davies will be sidelined for up to 6 weeks after suffering a torn hamstring against Newcastle.
Davies picked up the injury in the 2nd half of the Premier League opener on Saturday and was withdrawn in the 57th minute.
Heidar Helguson replaced the former Southampton man and he maybe set for an extended run in Sammy Lee's side.
Davies' injury comes as a huge blow ahead of the game against Fulham, however will have given Helguson a chance against his former club.
"Davo has suffered a small tear in a hamstring and will be out for up to 6 weeks," Lee informed the club's official website.
"It is obviously a massive blow as he's such an influential player in our team however it will have given an opportunity for somebody else to stake their claim."
Ricardo Vaz Te also picked up a foot injury in the 3-1 defeat to Newcastle and will undergo a scan Monday.
Meanwhile, Christian Wilhelmsson got international clearance and would face Fulham in midweek.
The Swedish international, who has joined Bolton on a season long loan, would replace Vaz Te in the starting line up at Craven Cottage.

Manager Sam Allardyce thinks Newcastle are only operating at 40% under his command yet their long suffering supporters must be feeling optimistic as the team started the season in style.
2 goals from Obafemi Martins and one from Charles N'Zogbia secured a 3-1 win against Bolton at the Reebok Stadium.
Allardyce was left satisfied not only at triumphing over the club where he has served 8 years however the manner of the win.
Without a number of key players, that included goalie Shay Given, Michael Owen and Joey Barton, they won emphatically.
Allardyce is now looking for the team to kick on and they now face Villa on Saturday.
He said, "I would like to improve Newcastle to a point where they have not been before. With the support of the owner and chairman the club is moving forward very quickly. I am 40% where I would like to be. There is another 60% to go and I have got to buy myself some time to get there. It is about winning games and we have managed to start well. When I had taken over at Bolton in 1999 we never stopped winning and that gave me the chance to build a fantastic structure at the club. I would like to do that at Newcastle however it might take me a year or two."
Newcastle had taken the lead in the 11th minute with a goal out of nothing.
N'Zogbia drove in a free kick from the right that eluded the Bolton defence and goalie Jussi Jaaskelainen.
They extended their lead in the 21st minute and again Bolton's defending was poor.
James Milner was able to weigh up his cross and found Martins at the back post. He beat Jaaskelainen with a superb overhead kick.
Bolton almost pulled a goal back 3 minutes later however Steven Taylor cleared Gary Speed's effort off the line.
The agony continued for Bolton in the 27th minute when Martins made it 3-0 with his 2nd goal of the game.
He had a bit of luck, however, as his shot from 20 yards had taken a deflection off defender Abdoulaye Faye to leave Jaaskelainen stranded.
Nicolas Anelka pulled a goal back for Bolton in the 50th minute however Newcastle were never troubled again.
Allardyce said, "I am not sure what level these players are at yet. They showed me a lot against Bolton which makes me very pleased. We have set a standard I do not want them to slip out of. We have a clear week before the Villa game, which will enable us to work on the fitness and the shape of the side."
To cap a miserable day for Bolton manager Sammy Lee forward Kevin Davies came off with a hamstring injury and maybe doubtful for the match at Craven Cottage against Fulham Wednesday.
Lee said, "If there are any positives to be taken out of losing 3-1 at home on the opening day it was the response I got from the players in the 2nd half. When we did get the ball down and started to play we looked a much different and better side. I am not happy with the display however at least I have something to work on."

An 83rd minute goal from Ricardo Vaz Te gave Bolton a 1-0 win over Tranmere at Prenton Park.
The Portuguese latched on to a pass from El-Hadji Diouf and fired home from 12 yards.
Vaz Te, Diouf and Heidar Helguson were the only 3 players to keep their places in the starting line up from the team which lost 3-0 to Hibs in midweek, with captain Kevin Nolan, Kevin Davies and goalie Jussi Jaaskelainen all returning to action.
There was no place for new loan signing Christian Wilhelmsson, whose work permit would not be received in time for him to play, whilst forward Nicolas Anelka, who was the subject of recent transfer speculation, did not play either.
The match was delayed by 10 minutes as the Bolton team bus was late arriving at the ground.
