Sevilla missed the chance to regain top spot in La Liga when they slipped to a shock 1-0 defeat at relegation-threatened Gimnastic on Sunday.

Former Real Madrid striker Javier Portillo earned Nastic a deserved win 14 minutes from time when he got between two defenders to send a header spinning into the net, after Jose Maria Calvo had swept a fine cross into the area.

Sevilla′s first defeat in eight league games meant Barcelona stayed top, level on 50 points with the Andalucians, after their thrilling 3-3 draw at home to arch-rivals Real Madrid on Saturday.

Valencia, who travel to Osasuna in Sunday′s late match, are in third place on 46, one ahead of Real who are fourth.

Real Zaragoza remained in fifth spot after a 1-1 draw at Real Betis, but Atletico Madrid drew level with them on 43 points after a 2-0 win at home to Deportivo Coruna.

Argentine winger Luciano Galletti got Atletico off to a flying start when he chested down a long pass, shrugged off a challenge from a defender and then rifled a shot under Depor keeper Dudu Aouate just 38 seconds after kickoff.

Atletico dominated for long periods but were unable to relax until substitute Mista volleyed in from close range five minutes before the end, after Galletti had clipped over a great cross from the right.

Bottom club Real Sociedad claimed their first victory in nine matches with a 3-1 win at home to Real Mallorca despite playing with ten men for the last 17 minutes.

Brazilian forward Savio scored his first goal since joining Sociedad in January, Serbian striker Darko Kovacevic found the net for the first time in nearly 18 months and midfielder Xabi Prieto weighed in with a third goal late on.

Sociedad have 17 points from 26 games, still three behind Gimnastic and nine adrift of Basque rivals Athletic Bilbao, who drew 1-1 at Celta Vigo.
