Chivas USA have announced that defender Jonathan Bornstein is expected to miss six weeks with a partial tear of his left medial collateral ligament (MCL). The injury occurred Thursday morning during Chivas USA's practice at The Home Depot Center. The extent of the injury was revealed via an MRI exam Thursday afternoon.
The 22-year-old Bornstein - a native of Los Alamitos, California, and the reigning Major League Soccer Gatorade Rookie of the Year - has shone for the U.S. National Team since being called up to his first U.S. camp in January, starting and going the full 90 minutes in international friendlies against Denmark and Mexico and scoring in his international debut on January 20 versus Denmark at The Home Depot Center.
In 2006, his rookie year, Bornstein in played 34 regular- and post-season games for Chivas USA (starting 34), logging 3,058 minutes and registering 6 goals and 4 assists. The UCLA and Cal Poly Pomona product would finish third in MLS - and first among field players - in minutes played in 2006, while leading all MLS rookies in goals scored.
