Jermaine Pennant only played two league games for Notts County - his hometown club because Arsene Wenger decided to sign him (signed in January 1999) after Pennant's outstanding performances

in County's first team at the age of 15. The £2 million deal at a tribunal left Notts County alleging that the Gunners had stolen their star player Jermaine went on to make his Arsenal debut against Middlesbrough in a Worthington Cup tie on November 30 1999 making him Arsenal's youngest ever first team player at 16 years and 319 days.

Pennant has now been capped at every youth level for England and in May 2001, Howard Wilkinson called him into the England Under 21 squad for a friendly against Mexico He joined First Division Watford on loan for a month in January 2002, playing nine games and scoring two goals.

Pennant made seven appearances (in Worthington Cup games) for Arsenal by the start of the 2002/03 season and was given his Premiership debut in a 2-2 draw at West Ham United He rejoined Watford on loan in mid November 2002
