AZ Alkmaar manager Louis van Gaal has condemned Boro's efforts to sign Gretar Steinsson.

The Icelandic full back was a target for Boro earlier in the summer and they lodged a £1 million bid for the player.

However, AZ discarded the bid and Boro turned their attention elsewhere and pounced for Luke Young.

AZ are due to face Boro on Saturday and van Gaal had taken time out to take a swipe at Boro.

"Boro's offer is nothing, £1 million for a player like that amounts to a waiter's tip," quipped van Gaal.

Meanwhile, Boro confirm young midfielder Jason Kennedy has joined Livingston.

The 20 year old product of Boro's much famed academy has joined Livi on loan until January.

A youthful Boro side beat Cumbrian club Carlisle 2-0 in a friendly at Brunton Park.

With Fabio Rochemback and Jason Euell providing the experience in an otherwise callow team, goals either side of the interval secured the win.

Substitute Ben Hutchinson and midfielder Jason Kennedy were the men on the scoresheet.
