An Everton Youth Academy product who made his Premier league debut as a substitute vs Crystal Palace. Vaughan came on and scored at the age of 16 years and 271 days, becoming, not only Everton's youngest ever player but also their youngest ever goalscorer and the Premier League's youngest ever goalscorer.

At the end of the season James was able to sign a professional contract (Premiership rules only allow a player to sign as a pro from the age of 17) and in July 2005 Vaughan put pen to paper on a four year deal.

Unfortunately the seaon was a disaster when, after just one first team sub appearance, in September 2005 Vaughan suffered a serious knee injury while playing for England U-19s.

James broke down twice afterwards so the club packed him off to Colorado to see world renowned knee specialist Dr Richard Steadman in April 2006.
