Grindavik Football Club

Cowdenbeath have beaten off competition from several clubs to sign former Celtic midfielder David Hannah on loan from Icelandic outfit Grindavik.

The 33-year-old, who played alongside Cowden boss Brian Welsh at Dundee Utd, will be at Central Park until February.

Welsh told his club website: "Considering the transfer window is shut, it is a real bonus that a player of Davie's calibre is available. He has played at a high level and is a very good player."

Elgin City, whose manager, Brian Irvine, played alongside Hannah at Ross County, had appeared to be leading the chase.

But he chose Second Division Cowdenbeath ahead of the Third Division strugglers.

"I am looking to utilise him in defence but will also give us options in midfield," said Welsh.

"He signed a two-year contract with Grindavik in the summer, so he will return to Iceland at the beginning of February."

Hannah, whose other clubs include AEL Limassol, St Johnstone, Bury and Brechin City, will fill the gap left by the departure of veteran defender Gary Smith to Dundee on loan.

Meanwhile, Elgin are also looking at 21-year-old Norwegian striker Shariar Ghaderisar, who is said to be keen to play in Scotland.
