Derby manager Billy Davies expects to conclude a deal for long time target Kenwyne Jones over the next few days.
The Rams have already had 2 bids discarded by Southampton for the 22 year old striker, that included a club record £5 million offer last Monday.
Davis says that a 3rd offer was made Friday for Jones, who missed the Saints' 4-1 home defeat to Crystal Palace yesterday with a hamstring injury as stated by manager George Burley.
"We all know a lot more firepower is required at Derby County, and we are working very hard to do that," mentioned Davies.
"That includes Kenwyne Jones. We are obviously in discussions, and along with a number of other targets, we hope we can conclude some business over the next few days. We went back in Friday to move the talks forward, so I am hoping over the course of the next few days we have some good news to tell you."
Another Southampton player in midfielder Jhon Viafara was linked with a transfer to Pride Park, noted by Davies for his displays in last season's play off semi-final.
"He is a very good player," added Davies, who was a little coy when asked if he would like to see the Colombian in a Derby shirt.
"Well, I did not like to see him in a Southampton shirt when he played against us in the play off semi-final. He did very well against us, caused us a lot of problems with his pace and power, and of course he scored some good goals into the bargain. So I do have bad memories of that lad."
With U.S midfielder Benny Feilhaber and Finland winger Mika Vayrynen due to complete moves from SV Hamburg and PSV Eindhoven, it maybe a busy week for Davies.
The Scot also remains hoping that of holding on to young player Giles Barnes following his performances for the Rams last season.
The 19 year old is presently recuperating from a broken metatarsal, however has attracted a lot of interest, notably from West Ham.
"There was an enhanced offer made for Giles, not only from West Ham, and also a number of other clubs," said Davies.
"But their valuation is miles away from where we would think about anything taking place, so as far as I am concerned, roll on the end of August. Hopefully Giles will be with us for the remainder of this season and beyond as a Derby player because I still feel his development must continue here."

The Hammers manager Alan Curbishley says that the club have held talks with Derby over the signing of Giles Barnes.
Curbishley also refused to completely rule out that possibility of resurrecting the Kieron Dyer deal which collapsed last week.
Barnes is one of the most sought after young players in England and played a huge part in helping Derby to the Premier League.
After seeing the Rams promoted, it was expects that Barnes would stay put at Pride Park.
However, Curbishley has now said that The Hammers were talking with Derby about a probable deal for 19 year old, who was actually born in East London.
"We were looking at the situation and we have spoken to Derby about it," Curbishley said to Sky Sports News.
The Hammers manager said that the 2 clubs cannot agree a fee for Barnes.
"At the moment nothing is happening, their valuation is not where we are at and he is a Derby player so I should not be talking too much about it."
Curbishley did admit that he would revive his interest in Dyer, after Newcastle pulled the plug on the deal last week.
"It is a difficult situation, lets only said we found it very difficult so we must see what happens and unfortunately Kieron Dyer is stuck in the middle and we must see what happens."
Hammers chairman Eggert Magnusson has again vented his again at Newcastle, who asked for an extra £2 million for Dyer, after a deal for £6 million was struck.
"The fact that Newcastle moved the goalposts in the middle of the game is not how to do business," he said.
"They had given us permission to speak to the player, he has had a medical and we had agreed a fee when we received a phone call that they would like £2 million more for the player."
Magnusson himself does not see how the Dyer deal maybe resurrected.
"We would not think it. However, I think the deal is now gone and I feel very sorry for the player, he would like a move, he would like to come closer to his family in Ipswich and now that has gone," he added.
"I think this business with Newcastle has shown that we are not prepared to pay any price that a club puts on a player. If there are perceptions that we will do that, they are not correct."

Derby manager Billy Davies admitted that he is "not anywhere near" having the team he would like for this season's Barclays Premier League campaign.
Davies thinks the Rams are weeks behind their rivals due to winning promotion via the play-offs, and also said he is not surprised player player Giles Barnes is attracting attention from other clubs.
"We have got to do a lot of signing to take ourselves up to the level of competition in the Premier League, we need to work as hard as we can and get it right in the future," Davies said.
Asked if he has 75% of the desired team in place, Davies added on BBC Radio 5 Live, "Less than that. We have an excellent bunch at the moment however we know the level of competition we face and we must add to the quality and the numbers between now and the end of the transfer window and we will work very hard to do that. I do not think we will be ready until the end of August and we are not anywhere nearer to the team we would like to have, however that is what happens when you are weeks behind everyone else. Consolidation in the Premier League is the number one goal and the number I will have given to my players is 42 points; that is the figure I will attempt to ram down the players' throats. We know if we can get through the 1st season the spending power becomes greater however at the moment we have a level we must work with and that makes life very difficult."
Asked about transfer speculation surrounding Barnes, who turned 19 Sunday, Davies added, "That is not a surprise, he's a young player with good potential. We have had phone calls about one or 2 of our players."
Derby had a bid for Southampton forward Kenwyne Jones turned down, a £5 million offer described as "unsolicited and unwelcome" by the Championship club.
Davies added, "We made a substantial offer and they turned that down however negotiations will continue. I felt we acted in a very professional manner, unfortunately in this game agents and 3rd parties are always on the phone trying to create a move or a problem for someone."
