After 7 years playing for Barcelona's youth teams Alex Ferguson stepped in to sign the young Spaniard, despite competition from Arsenal in 2004. Pique has said he would love to return to Spain to play for Barca's first team in the future.

He jumped straight into the periphery of the first team with a substitute appearance (admittedly in the Carling Cup where Ferguson tends to blood his youngsters early) at Crewe little more than a week after his first reserve team outing. Pique's first start was in the FA Cup in a draw with lowly Exeter City. Gerard's full debut came in place of the injured Gary Neville in a Premier league match

Gerard is the grandson of a former Barcelona vice-president and was nominated for Catalonia Player of the Year in 2001 while still at the Camp Nou.
