Gareth Southgate Rumours and Transfers
30 10 2007
Middlebrough boss Gareth Southgate has moved to quell fears that Jeremie Aliadiere has once again picked up a hamstring injury.
The French striker limped out of the defeat to Manchester United at the weekend just before the hour mark and it looked as though he had picked a recurrence of the problem he suffered earlier in the season.
Southgate, though, says the player was merely suffering from a bout of cramp.
He told the Echo: "We were very conscious of him having been out for six weeks, and we knew he wouldn't last 90 minutes. We hoped he could give us an hour, and we got 55 minutes out of him in the end. He cramped up and we had to make sure that he is right in the longer term for us."

Middlesbrough striker Jeremie Aliadiere has recovered from a hamstring injury and is expected to feature in this weekend's Premier League clash with Manchester United.
The 24-year-old Frenchman has not played since last month's game against West Ham United but his return is a major boost for Gareth Southgate and his struggling team.
The Boro boss told the club's official website: "We've missed Jeremie's pace and ability and his influence on the team. We've also got Robert Huth in light training and Emanuel Pogatetz has been in training with the team for a couple of days. When you start to get one or two players back into training, that's important because it gives the whole squad some light at the end of the tunnel."
Aliadiere has yet to open his goal account for Boro in six appearances for the club since his summer arrival at the Riverside Stadium from Arsenal.

Sir Alex Ferguson believes his current crop of stars can go on to establish Manchester United as the world's undisputed top club.
Not content with breaking Chelsea's stranglehold on the Premier League title last season, United spent more than £50million over the summer to build on the success.
New signings Owen Hargreaves, Nani, Carlos Tevez and Anderson have already made telling contributions to the current campaign, taking the team second in the league.
Having clicked into gear in an attacking vein with 12 goals in the last three games, Ferguson now wants to see his side go on to achieve true greatness.
"The last time we had a youthful squad like this, back in 1999, we won the Treble," Ferguson told a national newspaper.
"Now it's time for a new Reds dynasty to step forward, to achieve even more. My mission, our mission, is to make United the undisputed number one club in England, Europe and the world. We want to be challenging, and winning, on all fronts. That's the United way. Never standing still, always striving for higher and higher standards."
It had looked as if The Red Devils were going to prioritise Europe this season, in this the 50th anniversary of the Munich Air disaster.
But Ferguson's latest statement of intent will now be a concern for boss Gareth Southgate, who takes his Middlesbrough side to Old Trafford in the league on Saturday.

Gareth Southgate has backed his struggling Middlesbrough side to spoil Manchester City's perfect home record on Sunday.
The Blues have yet to drop a Barclays Premier League point at Eastlands under the canny guidance of Sven-Goran Eriksson.
City have also conceded just one goal in four league home games to date.
By contrast, Boro have lost three out of four on their top-flight travels and have scored just twice, though they have won twice and lost just once in four previous visits to the City of Manchester Stadium.
Southgate, who played under Eriksson for England, believes his team can upset the odds on Sunday.
He said: "City are in fine form and are full of confidence and we've got to go there and do a job, but we're confident we can do that. We've gone to Eastlands and played well in the past. City are playing well and it's a good test for us. They are playing with a lot of confidence. I saw a lot of their game against Newcastle last week and they were very good to watch. There's a lot of quality in their line-up, but there is on our side as well and we don't go anywhere in fear. We always perform well against the better teams and, yes, it's a good test for us. But I don't think any team has gone a whole season without dropping points at home so that 100% record has to go at some point. At the moment, they are flying but maybe we can cause an upset."
Southgate can see parallels between Eriksson's England strategies and the way the Swede has set up City's approach to games.
He said: "At international level, he was very clear on the way he wanted to play. There were elements of the way City are playing now that he tried to implement with England and they are playing very, very well - it's an excellent challenge for us. They hit teams on the break very quickly at home and away. It's interesting that they are playing predominantly with one striker - that's always something which catches your eye."
Despite having little time at his disposal due to his late appointment in the summer, Eriksson has implemented widespread, and hitherto, successful, changes at City.
As Southgate points out, the Swede was given a hefty transfer kitty, unlike his predecessor Stuart Pearce.
But, as the Boro boss also points out, making wholesale short-term changes does not always pay off so it is to Eriksson's credit that City have started so well.
"Sven's a new manager and he has had a fair bit more money than the last guy had, but the new players have done very, very well," Southgate said.
"Sven has bought players who have come in and done a good job - they've hit the ground running. They are reaping the benefits of all the changes that are taking place and that doesn't always happen at clubs. But there's not a team in the division that we fear - we've got to go there and do a job," Southgate added, before praising the City Academy, which, like Boro's, is producing some exciting new players.
"They've got several young players there that are playing very, very well. Historically, they've had a good academy at Manchester City and I'm sure for Sven one of the bonuses is the likes of Michael Johnson and Micah Richards coming through the ranks. They have shown that they can do a job at Premier League level."

Hull City are hopeful of sealing the loan capture of Middlesbrough defender Andrew Davies.
Tigers boss Phil Brown has held talks with the Premier League club over signing the 22-year-old on a short-term basis.
Davies has previously been loaned out to fellow Championship sides QPR and Derby County in recent seasons.
"We've spoken at length with (Boro chief executive) Keith Lamb and (manager) Gareth Southgate, and we're awaiting a response from them," said Brown.
"We've done our business to the best of our ability and we're just awaiting an answer from Middlesbrough."

Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate insists striker Lee Dong-gook will make an impact in the Premier League.
The 28-year-old arrived in January following a trial spell, but he has failed to make any sort of impact, as his only goal so far has come in the Carling Cup against Northampton.
Recent injuries to first-choice trio Mido, Jeremie Aliadiere and Tuncay Sanli have seen Lee pushed into first-team duty.
Despite making little impression thus far, Southgate is fully behind his Asian ace.
"I think there's a lot of criticism of him, but he's only had really three or four starts for us and it's hard if you haven't been first choice to get a flow and get your confidence up," insisted Southgate.
"He needs people to be supportive of him and I thought the two games against Sunderland and Spurs in particular, for large parts he's had to play up front on his own and that's a tough role for anybody. He's done a job for the team when asked and hopefully he can get goals that will answer the critics."
Southgate realises he is short in the striking department, but he insists that they will just have to try and cope.
"Injuries are part and parcel of the game. We have to deal with them," he said.
"I don't know how many strikers Everton have got. I think it's four. Lots of Premier League clubs are in the same boat with the same-sized squad of strikers. We have got injuries to three of ours and if other clubs were in the same situation then they would also have to find a way to deal with it. That's what we are doing. We have to think about what we can do to affect the situation and how we might improve."

Gareth Southgate says Middlesbrough cannot blame bad luck after slumping to defeat against Everton. Goals from Joleon Lescott and Steven Pienaar handed Everton the points, however Middlesbrough were guilty of missing a number of clear cut chances.

Manchester United are reportedly set to oppose any move to give Avram Grant a dispensation to coach Chelsea without the relevant UEFA licence.
The Israel, who took over from Jose Mourinho last week, does not have a pro licence, but has 12 weeks to achieve the qualification before he will have to seek a special dispensation from the Premier League.
Reports today, however, say Manchester United will oppose any dispensation request if it materialises, as they did in recent cases involving Glenn Roeder and Gareth Southgate.
