On December 6 2002: Birmingham City (English Premiership) signed Senegal defender, Ferdinand Coly on a six month loan from French first division side, Lens. The loan deal begins when the transfer window opens on January 1st 2003 but City has an option to buy Coly on a three year contract if they remain in the Premier League at the end of the season.

Coly joins Senegal team mate Aliou Cisse at Birmingham after Cisse encouraged Coly to move to Birmingham. But Coly can't play any matches until January 2003 Coly had been at Lens since 1999 before that he was at Chateauroux also a French club He played for Senegal in the 2002 World Cup
