Edgar Davids

Birth Date: 13 March 1973
Birth Place: Paramaibo
Birth Nation: Surinam
Nationality: Dutch
Position: Midfielder

Edgar Davids is probably more famous for the goggles he wears to protect his eye sockets after surgery on them for his glaucoma then for his skill.

Edgar Davids joined Ajax's youth club at the age of 5 and became a first team regular by the time he was 18. While at Ajax he was given the nickname the 'Pitbull' by coach Louis van Gaal due to his fierce drive and bite in the midfield. This allied to his great skill with the ball makes him a formidable player.

Edgar Davids was sent home from Euro '96 for openly criticising Holland's then coach Guus Hiddink and the senior white players in the Dutch side. He accused them of racial discrimination after only making 1 substitute appearance in the Netherlands first 2 games.

Edgar Davids said of Hiddink: "Hiddink must take his head out of player's asses, so he can see better."

Back at Ajax he drove the team to 3 Dutch titles, the European Super Cup, the World Club Cup, the UEFA Cup and the Champions League before gaining a transfer to AC Milan. His time there was short and most notable for him receiving a broken leg and he soon moved on to Juventus (Christmas 1997).

His time at Juve was highly successful - he even gained a new nickname 'Piranha' and was a vital member of their team until he tested positive for nandrolone and was banned in 2001. He had managed to gain 3 Italian League titles and a Champions League runners up medal before finding himself unwanted at the club. While at Juve he was good friends with a young Thierry Henry who tells of how Davids would spend hours ball juggling round the house while doing household tasks like making the tea.

Edgar Davids took a loan move to a struggling Barcelona side (January 2004) and transformed their season with Barca finally finishing as runners up in La Liga. In the summer of 2004 he moved to Internazionale on a free transfer but struggled to get in the side and in the summer of 2005 he moved on another free, this time to Tottenham Hotspur.
