Hamburg continued their surge away from relegation trouble with a 1-0 win at home to Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga on Sunday.

Hamburg, bottom of the table when Huub Stevens replaced Thomas Doll as coach two months ago, made it five wins from their last seven games when Mehdi Mahdavikia pounced on a loose ball and swept home with 30 minutes to go.

Hamburg are up to tenth with 32 points from 27 games - three points clear of the relegation places with seven games left to play.

Bochum also boosted their hopes of survival when Theofanis Gekas scored his 14th goal of the season to set them up for a 2-0 win over Hanover 96.

Gekas, the Greek striker, scored the opener in the 35th minute following an assist from Christoph Dabrowski. Cameroon′s Joel Epalle made it 2-0 three minutes before the break.

Bochum climb to 14th place with 30 points on the back of their second successive home win. That put them a single point clear of the bottom three in a league where only the top six are safely out of the relegation fight.
