Carlos Tevez Rumours and Transfers

Sir Alex Ferguson believes his current crop of stars can go on to establish Manchester United as the world's undisputed top club.

Not content with breaking Chelsea's stranglehold on the Premier League title last season, United spent more than £50million over the summer to build on the success.

New signings Owen Hargreaves, Nani, Carlos Tevez and Anderson have already made telling contributions to the current campaign, taking the team second in the league.

Having clicked into gear in an attacking vein with 12 goals in the last three games, Ferguson now wants to see his side go on to achieve true greatness.

"The last time we had a youthful squad like this, back in 1999, we won the Treble," Ferguson told a national newspaper.

"Now it's time for a new Reds dynasty to step forward, to achieve even more. My mission, our mission, is to make United the undisputed number one club in England, Europe and the world. We want to be challenging, and winning, on all fronts. That's the United way. Never standing still, always striving for higher and higher standards."

It had looked as if The Red Devils were going to prioritise Europe this season, in this the 50th anniversary of the Munich Air disaster.

But Ferguson's latest statement of intent will now be a concern for boss Gareth Southgate, who takes his Middlesbrough side to Old Trafford in the league on Saturday.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson admits the club are going to have to take care with the injury woes of Louis Saha.

The United striker - who has been plagued by injuries during his time at Old Trafford - will again be missing from Ferguson's squad for Tuesday's UEFA Champions League meeting with Dynamo Kiev.

Saha will miss United's trip to Ukraine with a knee injury sustained in the warm-up to the Premier League clash with Wigan earlier this month.

Ferguson has previously spoken of the difficulties in convincing Saha that he is fit to play, but the United boss now appears to be favouring a different approach.

"Louis got his injury in the Wigan game, now it's just a matter of taking it carefully," Ferguson told the Daily Mail.

"It's nothing different from our normal procedures with him. You'd like everyone fit. The starts of our last three or four seasons have been the same, disrupted by injuries. We've had to deal with it and this team are dealing with it very well."

Ferguson believes that his United side are well equipped to maintain their current run of positive form without Saha, after witnessing the increasingly impressive strike partnership between Carlos Tevez and Wayne Rooney.

"The important thing is to have the squad available and to cope with it, which I think we're doing," Ferguson added.

"This team are coming together and in Tevez and Rooney we have two exceptionally good players who are a real threat to defenders."

Manchester United will be able to call on the services of Nemanja Vidic for Tuesday's Champions League clash with Dynamo Kyiv after the Serbian defender was passed fit to play in Ukraine.

The 26-year-old had been suffering the after-effects of the concussion he suffered against Wigan Athletic earlier this month but United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has been pleased with the defender's recovery.

"There won't be many changes from Saturday. Vidic will come in and we may make one other change, but that's all," confirmed the veteran boss.

Ferguson still has to decide whether to continue with the strike partnership of Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez after the duo impressed in Saturday's 4-1 victory at Aston Villa.

He added: "In Tevez and Rooney we have too exceptionally good footballers. They are both such strong players and a real threat to defenders. It makes them a real consideration for the game against Dynamo, their form's good enough, but there's the tactical part to consider. I'd have liked to have had Michael Carrick and Owen Hargreaves here. They're ideal European players. We don't have either of them, but we have good options. There's Paul Scholes, Anderson, Darren Fletcher and John O'Shea. We may go with three players in the middle, as we did in Lisbon (against Sporting). That's certainly a possibility. Whatever we do, the intention will be to try and win the match because the rewards are great for us. It's an important game for Kyiv. They'll be wanting to win the match and I expect them to have a go. We see it as an opportunity for us because Roma and Sporting Lisbon have a double header against each other."

West Ham goalkeeper Robert Green is confident he can take the next step in his career if he is given another chance at international level with England.

The 27-year-old has made a success of moving up to the Premier League and his recent displays have has seen him suggested as a contender to take over from Paul Robinson if the form of England's first-choice continues to dip.

Robinson was blamed in some quarters for Russia's winner in Moscow which virtually ended England's hopes of reaching Euro 2008, not that Green saw the match as he does not watch football when he is not training or playing.

Green has backed Robinson to return to form but is also confident of his own ability.

Asked whether he thought he was the best in the country, Green said: "You have your beliefs and you believe that you are. You have to believe it because if you don't there are enough people to knock you around and tell you are not. A lot of it is down to chances in life and the opportunities you get to establish that. At the moment I've had chances to establish myself at Norwich and here. I don't think I've had an opportunity beyond that."

It is this belief that Nigel Worthington had faith in when Andy Marshall left Norwich in 2001. Green walked into the manager's office and told him he was ready to be the number one at Carrow Road, and the goalkeeper played a key role in the club playing in the top flight.

The move to Upton Park happened at the start of last season but he found himself out of the team after the 6-0 defeat at Reading, only to force his way back and help the club complete their amazing escape from relegation.

"You always want to be going forward," he said. "If you're not going forwards you are going backwards because everyone else is going forwards. I'm always looking to improve and hopefully I can do that this season. I've felt I've stepped on from last season."

Although Carlos Tevez took the plaudits, Green's performance against Arsenal was just as crucial to survival, and his form has continued this season.

Statistics point to him being the top English goalkeeper around, although his experiences last season have taught Green not to take anything for granted. He expects Robinson to bounce back from his recent run of poor form.

"He's not had the best of times of late but he is a quality goalkeeper," said Green.

"How do you get a goalkeeper through a bad time? Through giving him the confidence of picking him and playing him again. It may be one thing that will turn it around - maybe one second of a game. There have been arguments about undroppable players in the England team but there is only a game every month or so. You end up judging it on 90 minutes six weeks ago so it's a difficult one."

Green played eight minutes of a B international in 2006 but tore groin muscles taking a kick, meaning he was out of the World Cup squad and could not add to his only full cap.

He has been back in the squad but does not watch England when he is not involved, meaning he is yet to see the goals from the defeat in Russia.

Green said: "I've not seen it. I don't watch football. I live it and breathe it and spend my life thinking about it so to watch it in my spare time as well would be too much."

Green, however, is prepared for the scrutiny that comes with being an England goalkeeper if he does get a call-up.

"At Norwich it was equally scrutinised, people have a pop when you have a bad game," he said.

"It comes with the territory and I'll not pick up the newspaper to read or watch the television."

Carlos Tevez's brother Miguel has just completed a two-week trial with Manchester United, who are said to have been impressed with the ability of the 17 year old midfielder.

United manager Alex Ferguson is thought to have identified Miguel as a player to watch, but expects the player to return to Argentina as he was apparently homesick during his time in England.

Miguel is currently part of the setup at Boca Juniors, the club where older brother Carlos initially made his name.

He was part of the youth team which won the prestigious Efipan Cup in 2005, beating Gremio of Brazil in the final. He is yet to feature for the Boca first team.

Carlos Tevez feels his Manchester United team-mates have had a positive effect on his game and says joining the club was a "dream come true".

The Argentina international moved to Old Trafford in the summer from West Ham where he took a long time to find his form after his surprise arrival in August 2006.

However, he has had no such problems adapting to life with the Red Devils and having a manager like Ferguson has contributed to that.

"The main difference between United and West Ham is that the coach believes in me at my new club," Tevez told a national paper.

"I'm feeling physically stronger with every game. That makes me feel good and everything else, like scoring goals, comes as a result. When I look around the dressing room and see my team-mates there, I realise I'm at one of the most important clubs in the world. That is a dream come true. The most surprising thing about the squad is even though all the players are stars, they are all actually really humble and are good people. They've made me feel good and I've now got various friends in the squad like Rio Ferdinand, Ryan Giggs, Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney. I'm doing quite well with my English now. I understand the boss and my team-mates perfectly."

Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo's priority for the season is to win the Champions League with The Red Devils.

The Portugal international has put the fabled European prize above any personal achievements after being named in Fifa's shortlist for the World Player of the Year award.

"It's always nice to be recognised individually but the most important thing is winning things as a team with Manchester United,' said the 22-year-old.

"The priority for us this season is the Champions League, and retaining the title.'

United team-mates Carlos Tevez and Wayne Rooney were also named in the 30-man list, which includes ten Premier League players, with Chelsea providing five names.
