Hearts of Oak moved to within one point of winning the premier league after a 2-0 win at Heart of Lions.

Hearts made virtually sure of the title as Stanley Afedzie and Ekow Ghansah scored in each half against the fourth placed Lions.

Hearts can only be caught by AshantiGold who won 1-0 at relegation-threatened Bofoakwa Tano, but it would require a major swing in goal difference for the former African champions to miss out on 19th title.

Champions Asante Kotoko suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat by Sekondi Hasaacas to drop to third on 48 points, seven behind Hearts with two matches each left in the season. AshantiGold have 49 points.

Former Ghana Olympic striker Kwadwo Poku has been released by Danish side FC Midtjylland.

The 21-year-old joined the club from local side King Faisal in 2004 but has been told he has no future at the club.

Poku has failed to settle in Denmark since his move and managed to score only three goals in 27 appearances.

"Poku came to this club with a huge of potential, however, he failed to meet his or our expectation," Midtjylland sports director Jens Orgaard said.

"He has not been successful in making the transition from playing club football in Africa and playing in Europe. We have released him so that he can go home to continue his career."

Meanwhile, the striker has been linked with a move to local club Kumasi Asante Kotoko.

He was part of the Ghanaian team that played at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.

Former winners Canon Yaounde of Cameroon and Asante Kotoko of Ghana made shock African Champions League first-round exits at the weekend.

Canon found a one-goal first-leg lead insufficient as they lost 2-0 to Etoile of Congo in Brazzaville with Eder Lebaly scoring twice within five minutes during the opening half.

Victory rewarded ambitious Etoile president Rene Oba, who changed coaches despite completing a domestic double last year and hired experienced Romanian Nicolae Burcea.

The Congolese toured west Africa to prepare for the showdown with 1971, 1978 and 1980 champions Canon, who signed two Brazilians in an attempt to become an international force again.

Asante Kotoko of Ghana lost 4-2 on penalties to Ports Authority of Gambia in Banjul after a 1-1 tie on aggregate and the exit of the 1970 and 1983 title holders is likely to trigger the axing of Turkish coach Telat Uzim.

Musa scored after 75 minutes for Ports to cancel the first-leg lead Kotoko took to the heart of west Africa as they sought a second successive appearance in the group phase of the $3.5-million-dollar competition.

The other five former champions in action, Esperance of Tunisia, JS Kabylie of Algeria, TP Mazembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Wydad Casablanca of Morocco and Zamalek of Egypt, comfortably cleared the first hurdle.

But there was no shortage of upsets with FC Kallon, a Sierra Leone club owned by Monaco striker Mohamed Kallon, and Niger armed forces side AS FNIS among the surprise qualifiers for the second qualifying round next month.

Albert Foday was the Kallon hero, scoring just after half-time in Freetown to sink fellow debutants Ocean Boys of Nigeria 1-0 following a goalless first leg two weeks ago.

Hamidou Djibo was the toast of AS FNIS as his second-half goals propelled the minnows to a 2-0 victory in Niamey over USMA of Algeria, who lost out on the away-goal rule after building a 3-1 first-leg advantage.

Expensively assembled Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa moved closer to a third-round showdown with defending champions Al-Ahly of Egypt via a 2-0 away victory over Swaziland police team Royal Leopards.

Strikers Lerato Chabangu and veteran Zimbabwean Peter Ndlovu scored in the second half for Sundowns, who took a 4-2 lead into the return encounter at a baking Somhlolo Stadium near Mbabane.

Zimbabwean side Highlanders advanced to the second round of the Champions League on Sunday after beating Pamplemousses of Mauritius on penalties.

The visitors advanced despite losing 1-0 in the second leg of the first round tie but won 9-8 in a penalty shootout in Belle Vue to advance.

Pamplemousses needed to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first-leg and they dominated the early exchanges but missed several scoring chances.

The home side improved their play after the interval and scored the only goal of the game in the 57th minute through Andy Sophie.

Highlanders will now face defending champions Ahly of Egypt in the second round of the competition next month.

Also cruising to the second round are Nigeria's Nasarawa United who beat ASFA Yennega of Burkina Faso 2-0 to go through 3-1 on aggregate.

Match called off in the 86th minute after ASFA were reduced to eight players following their third red card.

FC Kallon of Sierra Leone defeated Nigerian champions Ocean Boys to advance on a 1-0 aggregate.

The home side won the game thanks to second-half strike by Albert Foday.

Zambia's Zanaco also progressed to the second round with a 1-0 aggregate victory over Likhopo of Lesotho.

Winstone Kalengo's strike three minutes after the break secured the tie in Lusaka.

Meanwhile, two time champions Asante Kotoko of Ghana were eliminated after losing 4-2 on penalties to Gambian's Port Authority.

The Gambians had forced the game into penalties with a vital goal with only 14 minutes remaining that canceled out Kotoko's 1-0 lead from the first leg.
