Antonio Cassano is a new type of Italian strikers destined for a bright future. With pace, agility, and ball-handling skills, Cassano was a perfect strike partner for Francesco Totti at Roma

Cassano started in the Serie A playing for his home town, Bari. With excelent performances both for his club and the Italian Under 21 squad, it was obvious that he was being scouted by the big clubs. Juventus, AS Roma, and Manchester United were all supposed to be after the Antonio. In the end it came down to the two Italian sides with Roma eventually acquiring him. When the deal was finalised, Cassano became the highest paid teenager in the world. This season he netted 14 goals for the side that paid $34 million for his transfer.

When Antonion Cassano scored a hat-trick in Roma's match against Siena, Italy's coach Giovanni Trapattoni stated that if Cassano kept performing, the striker would be going to Portugal. Considering that Cassano scored in his debut for Italy back in November against Poland, Trappatoni kept his word.

Cassano will be replacing striker Filipo Inzaghi who has been left out of the national team. With Roma team mates in the national squad, Cassano will have some familiar faces around him. Ultimately, Trappattoni will be hoping to take the strike partnership of Totti and Cassano to Portugal.
