Started his career as a trainee at Aston Villa, but, even though he signed a professional contract with the Midlands club he never made a first team appearance.

In November 1998 he joined Torquay United on loan where he made his league debut. He went on to score 3 goals in his 9 appearances.

He was farmed out on loan, again, in March 1999, this time to Port Vale. In the July he left Villa for Burnley in a ?200,000 switch.

In September 2000 he left Burnley and joined Rotherham United initially on loan, then permanently for ?150,000. He scored 36 goals in his 114 matches for the Millers and increased his value significantly.

So much so that when he joined Cardiff City in August 2003 it was for ?850,000. But after a difficult time there he was allowed to leave for only ?50,000 to join Ipswich Town in January 2006 as Joe Royle's last signing for the club.

He made his international debut for the Republic of Ireland as a sub versus Norway in April 2003.
